Carpet Care 101

February 18, 2021

Here are some important aspects of proper carpet care

One of the most common choices for flooring is carpet.  Carpet is comfortable, looks attractive, and can be very resilient when it is cared for properly.  However, when carpet is not properly maintained, it can quickly result in some very undesirable outcomes.  The most common problems that can arise are allergen irritation, unsightly stains, and obvious signs of degradation and wear.  If you are looking for some tips to help avoid these undesirable outcomes, read on.

Important Aspects of Proper Carpet Care

Proper maintenance is the key maintaining carpet that will continue to look new and fresh over the long haul.  Are you ready for the good news?  This doesn't have to consume too much of your time, as long as you maintain a regular cleaning and maintenance schedule for your carpet.

Vacuum Twice a Week (at least)

Vacuuming is important because it helps get rid of dirt, debris, and allergens that are trying to take up residency in your carpet.  As dirt and debris accumulate in your carpet, they will do damage to the carpet fibers and cause your carpet to degrade and wear out much more quickly.  Not to mention that dirt is, well...dirty!  And who wants a bunch of dirt hiding in their carpet fibers!  Allergens will also seek to hide in the depths of your carpet and need to be removed by regular vacuuming.  If you have pets and/or high traffic through your home, you may want to vacuum even more frequently to help maintain your carpet.

Entry Points to the House

A lot of dirt and debris can be carried into your home on the underside of footwear.  The best way to help prevent this dirt and debris from making it into your carpet is to always remove footwear as soon as you enter the house.  Additionally, placing floor mats at all entry points will help to remove dirt and debris before it has a chance to end up in your carpet.  You can even place some heavy-duty doormats on the outside of all entry points to encourage cleaning shoes before coming inside.

Stains Should be Cleaned Immediately

Little Timmy can't help it!  It's his calling in life to smear, spill, splash, and smudge random liquids and food items on your carpet.  Believe me, we understand the frustration when Little Timmy demonstrates his gift and leaves his mark on the carpet.  Fortunately, most stains can be (almost) completely removed without professional cleaning, as long as you hurry.  Liquids should be blotted up immediately with paper towels and as quickly as possible, break out your preferred carpet stain remover and go to work!  Following the manufacturers recommended guidelines of course.  Once the stain has been dealt with.. now it's time to go and deal with Little Timmy.

For the Adventurous - Rearrange Furniture Periodically
We understand that this suggestion will cause heart palpitations for some of our readers.  The idea of actually rearranging the furniture in a room is unthinkable.  For you creatures of habit who wouldn't dream of rearranging furniture, you can skip to the next suggestion.  But, for those who like to live on the edge, why not rearrange the furniture in the areas of your home with carpet?  The benefit to this idea is that it would create new traffic patterns through the room and help avoid premature carpet wear and carpet fiber damage.

Carpet Stain Protectors

Carpet protectants will coat the carpet fibers providing a protective barrier to help prevent carpet stains.  Ok - I'm not sure we needed to even write that sentence, seems pretty self-explanatory... but, oh well.  The best time to apply carpet stain protectant is immediately after a professional cleaning.  This will help to ensure that your carpet remains stain free between professional cleanings.  Just keep a close eye on little Timmy, he might struggle with feelings of melancholy because he's unable to exercise his gifting fully.

Professional Carpet Cleaning
Though all of the above recommendations are helpful and important, they all have their limitations when it comes to getting the most out of your carpet. In addition to the above recommendations, your carpet needs a professional cleaning at least once a year.  The tools used by carpet cleaning professionals cannot be matched by regular home vacuums, equipment, and cleaning agents.  If you want your carpet to look great and stand the test of time, regular professional cleaning is a must.  The hot water extraction method used by our Rotovac Bonzer steam cleaner kills 99.9% of all germs and is completely safe for children and pets.
